I wish I would have known of this site this past Fall. ;)

I have a long history of thrombocytopenia...usually hovering around b/w 100K--150K. When I"m pregnant, it drops below 100K--my 2nd pregnancy I was at 70K, with my 3rd pg I was at 60K. I had to have a general C-Section with 2nd pg b/c labor would not progress & I couldn't have a spinal/epidural due to "low platelets"

With my 3rd pregnancy we just did a repeat CSection.

After each pg my platelets rebounded shortly after delivery.

My recent pg (delivered Nov 11, 09) was a twin pg. It was different right off the bat...but around 28 weeks my platelets started plummeting to 40K range. I live in rural area, was put on bedrest (due to shortening of cervix) and started on prednisone 80mg dailyto raise platelets. It had a modest effect on platelets, and put me into steroid induced gestational diabetes.

My platelets raised about 5K, but when trying to taper down they went lower. I was at 28K when I was transferred to a University hospital by ambulance (6 hr drive) so I could be close to a blood bank.

At the University the medical staff was sure they could raise my platelets, perhaps over 100K so I could have a spinal CSection.

I had a couple rounds of IVIG (along with 80mg prednisone daily). Platelets decreased.

I had WinRho. Platelets decreased.

I had pulse Dexamethasone....which was ZERO fun with my steriod induced gestational diabetes. I had to test my sugars EVERY hour for three days!!! At this point I was now injecting insulin into me six times a day...and leaving bruises with each injection. I was putting my injections INTO my bruises. Platelets decreased.

I was at 34 weeks gestation when my doctors decided I would have to deliver or I could lose the babies. My platelets were about 11K

The day of CSection my platelets were under 10K. During delivery I had over 30 units of blood and clotting factors. I almost died. I was put in the ICU for 36 hours, my girls went to NICU (due to prematurity & ABO incompatibility---non platelet related).

My platelets after delivery were 105K...due to transfusions. But they went down. I got more units of blood over the next couple of days...and eventually they stopped giving them to me.

I had other complications....but was eventually discharged.

I tapered myself off the prednisone & at last visit my platelets are now 130K!!! This is 9 weeks postpartum. My babies are perfect and are doing well.

We made it!!! Whew!! But it was the most difficult/challenging event of my life!!

How long have you had low platelets Did you talk to your doctor much before getting pregnany about your low platelets.

Thanks again for sharing your post!!!!

Thanks so much for posting your preg story. We are thinking of a second child. I've had ITP for almost a year so it would be a different pregancy than the first. I'll admit, your story is exactly what I am afraid of! When you said they gave you blood, do you mean platelets to help with the surgery?

So glad you had a great ending. thanks again, Giselle
