I have been off prednisone for about 2 months now and I have been following a diet. I put on alot of weight (13 kg) in a short time while on the preds, and I tried to be on a diet while on preds, but it did'nt work at all. I have been og this diet before, and I always loose weight, but this time it goes much slower. I have the feeling that the effects of preds on weight gain is still in my body. Anyone knows if it's normal that it takes some time before the effects of preds is out of the body, and how this effect weight loss?
I also have started to exercise, and it was really hard in the beginning. I have al lot of pain in my body after beeing off the preds, espesially in my knees and in my back, but after beeing exersising for about 6 weeks, only once a week (spinning) I really feel a difference on my body. I am far from how I was before, but it's good to see an amelioration of my bady's shape.

Vanja:
Prednisone actually redistributes fat and puts it in places where you don't want it. It is harder to lose Prednisone weight. Keep at it; that's all you can do.

Vanja, I gained a lot of weight with prednisone. Sandi is right. The weight was distributed right around my middle. It was horrible. I've been off pred since May 2nd. The weight is coming off slowly. Im ok with that as long as it comes off. My face was really puffy and now it's back to normal. It takes time. I've learned to be patient.

Hi Vanja. Last year when I was on higher doses of Pred. I gained a little over 30 pound, but although it took about 3 months after tapering off the Pred. I lost it all. Now I'm back on high doses of Pred again and am gaining weight again. Please don't get discouraged, because I believe you can lose the weight. Just be patient and keep up the exercising. Deb |

| I didn't put on any weight when I was on pred but I still had the fat redistribution and try as I might I can't lose that fat around my middle either. I don't want to lose much weight but I'd love to see that spare tire go away. |

Audi, a stone is 14lb. Dont know what it is in kilos. My hema told me it will be a good few month off the pred before i will notice a very slow reduction of my weight. All 28lb of it which frightens me a bit as i dont believe in diets and my gym closed down due to leigonaires disease. Julia 132k |

Thank you all for your answers. It's good to get support on my theory that the effects from the preds doesn't leave as quickly as I hoped. Anyhow, I'm satified that I have startet exercising and that I feel in better shape and less pain. I guess I just have to continue beeing patient as I was getting my platelets up. To day I got my flu shot as well.

Well I gained almost 80 lbs. Ive lost about 45 lbs. I started tapeing off the pred in january and its been well almost 3 weeks, I started to lose weight about 5 months ago, more noticable now, that i can fit into my clothes that were pre pred weight. I really didnt do anything different then what I did while on the pred. Its just very gradual. Not as fast as I want. I still want to lose another 50lbs. Just keep at it. it takes time

Here is an interesting spin on this subject. After being heavy for 30 years, October 2005 I decided to change my life style via a change in diet and exercising. I have lost weight slowly since the decision. January of 2006, I started to notice some unusual bruising and bleeding that would come and go. June of 2006, I entered the hospital with a count of 2 and mouth sores to the extent that eating was all but impossible. I left the hospital eight days later with a count of 20 and a diagnosis of ITP. For the next three months, I took 60 mg of prednisone along with WinRho. I dropped the prednisone and continued with WinRho for several months before being diagnosed with CTP. I took 400 mg of Danazol for six months. During the whole experience, I continued to lose weight and I have lost 85 pounds despite the various medications. For the past several months I have held a weight that is "medically" correct for my height.
My family has concluded that the change in life style and weight loss is the trigger for my CTP. Just my luck! Hmm! |

| What lead them to the diagnosis of CTP? My ITP runs in cycles in that since diagnosis I ALWAYS dip right around the time I ovulate. I wonder what would happen if I stopped ovulating? Hmmm..... |

Hi Nanzknits. CTP is very difficult to diagnose. My CTP diagnosis came about after several WinRho treatments giving the normal up and down swings in plateltes. I would always bottom out and my treating hematologist tried to prevent this by moving the WinRho into higher counts as I was falling. My last treatment of WinRho was given at a count of 150 and I cotinued to fall for three more weeks. With a count of 3 and quickly turning into a puddle, I had a group meeting with several of the hematologists within the local hematological practice. They are a talented group of doctors and I know them all now. They concluded that my rebound count from WinRho was too high to be ITP,(I was rebounding at 1.3-1.5 million), and one of the doctors had rememberance of a CTP patient that he had seen 20 years earlier as a fellow. With nothing else to offer for treatment, I took platelets that day and retained them, again not an ITP characteristic. To further test for CTP, I went through the following cycle unmedicated. Actually, I got as far as I could but with a count of 1, I was leaking extensively and I took platelets. They lasted for a few days and I took them again. My counts started to move up on there own after being down for two weeks. Three weeks after having a count of 1, I was 800 with no medication. I don't know if this is of any help.
I did want to mention that I was able to meet one other person with CTP via this PDSA discussion board. Also, I have learned alot from this board. For those who read and regularly respond, you do a great job! Thank you!

| Back in 1996-7 I had a problem with fat redistribution in the lower abdomen, caused by Prednisone over an extended period before my splenectomy. I had something like a tummy tuck to remove the apron which had become infected, with a scar from hip to hip. Now I see the apron coming back because 10 years later I'm back on Prednisone again and have gained almost 30 lbs since July this year. Must admit I've been feeling sorry for myself and hungry all the time for the wrong foods. I really don't want to go through that operation again and have to get my will-power back...but the depression brought on by pred and ITP again is overpowering. |

Water exercise is often less painiful than regular land exercise for those whose joints hurt, especially after prednisone tapers. Sounds like Vanja found spinning was the answer for her. It's so important to keep moving so the joints keep working.

I have had an opposite problem...I keep losing weight. I have never been able to get past a certain weight, even since college. I was generally at 135. Well, I have been on pred for about 6 weeks, starting at 60mg and tapering down 10 a week...now my weight is at 120. What a diet! I have been talking, eating, cooking, cleaning, getting up at 6 am ( I am not a morning person!), and speeding around with energy! I know now that I did not have any energy before compared to this! I do see that I am kind of spongy (keeping water weight) near my ankles and my face is rounder. Lots of pimples, though (Argh!). I am getting kind of worried though that I am going to lose too much weight. I have never had that problem before because I love/live to eat! Going in for a check-up Tues...so we'll see what the hema says. Guess our bodies all act different on the prednisone. My husband is kinda worried that once I am off, the fairy tale is over and I will go back to not cooking again! He's funny!
